Originally known as Stamati’s but under the same ownership, Bahari should be near the top of any foodie’s list of Greek restaurants in Astoria. The window display looks more like a fish market, and the name Bahari (the Greek work for Allspice seasoning) sounds more Middle Eastern, so the place doesn’t scream ‘traditional Greek taverna,’ but that’s exactly what it is.
Bahari serves all of the traditional Greek dishes in two nicely renovated yet homey-feeling dining rooms in the back. While they’re usually busy, you can still get a table without much hassle, unlike at some of their more famous competitors. The service is friendly and it really feels like a family-run business. Not to mention Bahari is located right under the Broadway N stop just 4 stops from Midtown, making it the closest Authentic Eats NYC-recommended Greek restaurant to Manhattan for the less adventurous types. Best of all, the food is always consistent, not rushed, and about as close as you can get to a real homemade Greek meal.
