J.G. Melon is a long-running Upper East Side establishment that feels like a classic Irish pub, but also happens to serve easily one of the best burgers in NYC. Even though this part of the Upper East Side is a bit of a no man’s land as far as great restaurants go, you’ll want to travel from near and far if you have any interest in a ‘simple’ pub burger done properly. Everything about the place is old school. The dim lighting, cash-only policy, sometimes grouchy service, and huge walnut bar and dining area that look like they haven’t ever been updated are all part of what makes J.G. Melon what it is. The burger, with its same secret meat blend that’s been used for over 40 years, is what makes it worth traveling for.
For those who just want the burger and not so much the full experience, or simply want to save a trip uptown, J.G. Melon recently opened a Greenwich Village location as well. The burger has been properly replicated, but the old-school vibe never can be. The authentic old New York dining experience is becoming more and more rare, so when you have more time on your hands and you’re craving another burger (and you will), take the trip up to 74th street to see where it started.
